Service Description

Dr. Anita Huang has over 20 years of experience with one of her expertise in treating patients with mental disorders. A growing number of people are seeking alternatives to antidepressant medications, and new research suggests that acupuncture could be a promising option. One new study found the traditional Chinese practice to be as effective as antidepressants, and a different study found that acupuncture may help treat the medications' side effects. Acupuncture, along with Chinese herbs, can help ease depression symptoms, as well as treat the underlying condition. Some detailed studies have found acupuncture just as effective as fluoxetine (Prozac) in easing depression symptoms. Some of the acupuncture points targeted for treating depression include Guanyuan (CV4), Qihai (CV6),Zhongwan (CV12), Hegu (L14), Master of Heart 6 (MH6), Yanglingquan (GB34), Zusanli (ST36), Taixi (K13), Shugu (BL65), Sanyingjiao (SP6), Quchi (LI11), Yinxi (HT6). Studies indicate that acupuncture can stimulate the production of the hormones such as serotonin and beta-endorphins that are known to suppress your appetite, control your mood and increase the breakdown of fat. Another study has found that acupuncture effectively improves appetite in patients with GI tract cancer. Acupuncture decreases stress by releasing endorphins i.e. natural pain killer chemicals in the brain. This therapy improves blood circulation throughout the body and boosts the amount of oxygen in tissues. Acupuncture has proven particularly helpful in relieving hypertension and physiologic stress. Unlike some medications for stress and anxiety—like antidepressants, which can take weeks to fully kick in—the effects of acupuncture are sometimes felt immediately. According to Chinese medicine, energy, or “qi,” flows up and down pathways in the body. “Sometimes the energy is blocked, deficient, excessive, or unbalanced. This puts the body out of balance and in turn causes stress and anxiety. Acupuncture points for anxiety include your breastbone, between your eyebrows, or the insides of your wrists.
